When Replacement Parts Don’t Exist
Reverse engineering and additive manufacturing are used to replace a repeatedly failing factory component with a stronger, longer-lasting solution.
Project Overview
Project: Cub Cadet Snowblower Gearbox Components
Service: Reverse Engineering & Functional Prototyping
Application: Replacement Powertrain Components
Process: Failure analysis, measurement, CAD reconstruction, prototyping, fitment testing and final manufacturing.
Result: More than two years (and counting) of service from components replacing factory parts that failed after approximately six hours of operation.
The Problem
After approximately six hours of operation, the original dog gears inside a Cub Cadet snowblower gearbox failed.
Direct replacement components were not available separately, leaving replacement of the entire gearbox as the conventional repair option.
Reverse Engineered to Last
Dynamic3D used the failed factory components as a reference, reverse-engineered their geometry, and redesigned the parts with durability and service life in mind.
The replacement components were manufactured, installed and tested in the original gearbox
More than two years later, those same parts remain in service and continue to perform through Manitoba winters.
Review:
“Dude those parts worked perfectly! Thank you again!
